Kalamalka Lake is often referred to as the “Lake of a Thousand Colors” due to its stunning array of turquoise, blue, and green hues. These colors change throughout the year, influenced by the lake’s limestone deposits and varying temperatures.
The name “Kalamalka” is derived from the Syilx (Okanagan) word for the lake, which means “long lake cuts through the bush and makes mountains in two.”
During the summer, Kalamalka Lake’s water temperature can reach up to 24°C (75°F), making it one of the warmest lakes in the Okanagan Valley and perfect for swimming and water sports.
Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park offers over 14 km (8.7 miles) of hiking and biking trails with breathtaking views of the lake. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant species, providing a fantastic natural setting for outdoor activities.
The lake is home to the Kokanee salmon, a landlocked form of sockeye salmon, which is a significant species in the lake’s ecosystem.
Kalamalka Lake boasts several popular beaches, including Kal Beach and Cosens Bay Beach, which are perfect spots for relaxing, sunbathing, and enjoying picnics.
The lake’s clear and calm waters make it an ideal location for paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. The scenic beauty and tranquil environment provide a perfect backdrop for water-based activities.
Like many lakes in the region, Kalamalka Lake was formed during the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago, when glaciers retreated and left behind a natural basin filled with meltwater.
The lake and its surroundings hold cultural significance for the Syilx (Okanagan) people, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years and maintain a deep connection to the land and water.
The Kalamalka Lake Road offers a picturesque drive along the lake’s edge, providing stunning views and access to various recreational spots. It’s a favorite route for locals and tourists alike.
